Local Groups and Organisations

On 6th September 1950 the Young Wives had its first meeting with a social in the Old Reading Room. (This no longer exists) Mrs. Connie Wheeler was the first chairman from 1950-1952, when Mrs. Vera Savage became the first leader from 1952-1957. Coffee and biscuits in 1964 cost 4d (old money). Now we charge 20p. Subscriptions in 1957 were 2s 6d. We now charge £13 a year, which is good value. Over the years there have been a variety of talks and trips and we have met so many interesting people.
Some time in the past it was decided that the group should be re-named Marston Wives. As a group we continue to run with some 30 members of various ages.
It would be nice to have some new members with new ideas. We realise that many young wives work and have other commitments in the evening. To be involved with our group it is not necessary to be a wife, merely female. Again it is not necessary to come to every meeting, just 'cherry pick' the evenings that are of interest.
In September 2000 we celebrated out Golden Jubilee. Many past and present members came to help us celebrate this special occasion, some ladies travelling quite a distance to join us, and many friendships were re-newed. In 2010 we celebrate our Diamond Jubilee.
Our last meeting of the year is in June with a trip out. In June 2007 we were fortunate enough to get tickets to go to Windsor castle to watch the Royal family in procession to the garter service. A very enjoyable day.
We do not meet in July or August, but start again in September. For further information contact Ann Joyce - Tel: 242329
