Protest day Friday 11th February 2011 - when local residents were joined by local book illustrator Korky Paul to protest against the proposed closure of Old Marston Library.

A Korker of an event!

Oxford-based illustrator Korky Paul delighted nearly 100 parents and children at an event organised by Save Old Marston Library Group on Friday 11 February.

The event, organised by the Save Old Marston Library Group, was so popular that it had to be held in the hall adjacent to the little village library, which is the size of a living room but which regularly receives such high numbers of visitors that people have to queue outside to browse and renew books.

After signing copies of his popular Winnie the Witch books, Korky held a reading inside the hall and applauded the efforts of local schoolchildren to save their much-loved library.

He read out a letter written by Rowan Waterfield to Councillor Keith Mitchell, begging him to save the library which she admitted she uses ‘nearly every day after school’. Korky also congratulated 11-year-old Dexter Drown, who will be speaking on behalf of the Group to councillors on Tuesday 15 February when budgets will be discussed.

One of the organisers of the event, Sam Pope, of Cromwell Close in Marston, was amazed at the turnout. ‘We always knew the library was popular within our community but we were overjoyed with the fantastic turnout on Friday,’ she said. ‘We hope that the efforts put in by parents, children and of course Korky Paul will go a long way to making councillors reconsider their stance with regard to funding all libraries in the county.’

Many of the children who attended dressed as their favourite story character to bring extra life and colour to the event and needless to say there were many Winnie the Witches to wave their magic on proceedings!”
